Hino Motors Ltd., of Japan, has identified past misconduct in its applications concerning the emissions and fuel economy of some of its engines for the Japanese domestic market.

“This does not apply to any of the engines fitted to Hino trucks sold in Southern Africa and will not affect the supply of these trucks in the local market,” commented Ernie Trautmann, Vice-President of Hino Trucks South Africa.

Hino Japan says that after internally identifying potential issues regarding certification testing to determine emissions performance for on-road engines for the North American market, Hino voluntarily commenced an investigation, led by outside counsel, and provided an initial report of of its finding to the relevant regulators. Hino is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities in North America regarding this investigation.

Hino then expanded the scope of its investigation to include a review of emissions certification procedures for engines certified to Japanese regulatory standards. This process has identified misconduct relating to the certification procedure. Hino subsequently suspended the sale of the affected models in Japan.

Going forward, Hino will continue to conduct a thorough investigation of the facts related to engine certification procedures, verify compliance in the certification process, and verify engine performance.

In addition, in view of the significance of the issues, Hino will form a special investigation committee consisting of independent outside experts. The committee will investigate the root causes. In addition, the committee will propose remedial measures concerning engine development processes and best practice at Hino.

During a media briefing in Tokyo on 4 March 2022 Hino deeply apologised for any inconvenience caused to its customers and stakeholders.

Hino commits to carefully reviewing the reports from the outside experts, taking effective remedial measures, and reforming its corporate structure to put compliance first to restore the confidence of all stakeholders
